How to brew tea

Get the best flavor with the right temperature, time, and amount. Quick reference below.

Water temperature

  • Black & herbal: boiling (100°C / 212°F)
  • Green & white: 70–85°C (158–185°F) — avoid bitterness
  • Oolong: 85–95°C (185–203°F)

No thermometer? Let boiling water sit 1–2 minutes before pouring on green or white.

Steeping time

  • Black: 3–5 min
  • Green: 2–3 min (longer = more bitter)
  • White & oolong: 2–4 min
  • Herbal: 5–7 min or more

Amount per cup

About 2–3 g per 200 ml (one heaped teaspoon loose leaf). Adjust to taste — stronger teas often need less.

Quick tips

  • Use fresh water; reboiled can taste flat.
  • Preheat cup or pot for even brewing.
  • Cover while steeping to keep heat in.
  • Store tea in a cool, dry place away from light and odors.
