Chrysanthemum and Goji Wellness Infusion

The classic Chinese pairing—fragrant chrysanthemum flowers steeped with sweet goji berries and a touch of rock sugar for a soothing, caffeine-free cup.

Chrysanthemum and goji berries are one of the most beloved pairings in Chinese tea culture, traditionally enjoyed as a cooling, caffeine-free infusion. The flower brings a soft floral sweetness while the goji adds gentle fruity depth, and together they make a cup that feels calming and restorative.

A little rock sugar rounds everything out, melting slowly into the warm infusion to soften any faint edge from the flowers. The result is delicate, lightly sweet, and clean on the finish—an everyday wellness cup rather than a bold or intense brew.

Brew gently for the best flavor. Steeping the flowers too hard or too long can pull out a slight bitterness, so a few minutes in hot (not boiling) water is plenty. The goji berries can be left in the cup and eaten once they have plumped up and softened.

Sip this in the late afternoon or evening to unwind, since it contains no caffeine to disturb rest. As with any chrysanthemum drink, take care if you have a ragweed or daisy (Asteraceae) allergy, and try a small amount first.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp dried chrysanthemum flowers (about 6–8 blooms)
  • 1 tbsp dried goji berries
  • 1 cup hot water (around 90°C, not boiling)
  • 1–2 small pieces rock sugar (or honey, to taste)

How to make it

  1. 1Rinse the chrysanthemum flowers and goji berries briefly with a little warm water and drain.
  2. 2Place the flowers, goji berries, and rock sugar in a cup or small teapot.
  3. 3Pour over the hot water and cover; steep for 4–5 minutes until fragrant and pale gold.
  4. 4Stir gently to dissolve the rock sugar, then sip warm, eating the softened goji berries at the end.
