Iced Chocolate Black Tea with Orange and Cream

Cold-brewed chocolate black tea layered with orange zest and a float of cream — a refreshing riff on chocolate-orange that keeps the tea's bittersweet cacao notes front and center.

Cold brewing is the best way to serve chocolate black tea over ice. Hot-brewed tea chilled quickly over ice cubes can taste muted and slightly flat, while a slow cold steep draws out the cocoa and malt notes gently, leaving behind most of the harsher tannins that turn bitter when chilled.

Orange and chocolate is one of the most reliable flavor pairings in dessert-making, and it translates beautifully here. A few strips of orange zest steeped alongside the tea brighten the cup considerably, cutting through the cacao's bitterness with a clean citrus edge.

The cream float is optional but recommended — pouring a small amount of lightly sweetened cream over the back of a spoon so it sits on top of the iced tea creates a marbled, dessert-like presentation, and the first sip mixes the cream and tea into something close to a chocolate-orange cream soda.

This makes a great afternoon refresher when you want something that feels indulgent without being heavy — it's lower in sugar than an iced mocha but still delivers a satisfying chocolate hit alongside a moderate caffeine lift.

Ingredients

  • 3 chocolate black tea bags
  • 3 cups cold water
  • 2 wide strips of orange zest
  • 2 tbsp simple syrup, or to taste
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream or oat cream, lightly sweetened
  • Ice cubes
  • Orange slice, for garnish

How to make it

  1. 1Combine tea bags, orange zest, and cold water in a pitcher. Refrigerate 8–10 hours (or overnight).
  2. 2Remove tea bags and zest, pressing gently to extract flavor. Stir in simple syrup.
  3. 3Fill glasses with ice and pour the chocolate tea over the top, leaving about an inch of space.
  4. 4Slowly pour the cream over the back of a spoon so it floats on top. Garnish with an orange slice and serve immediately.
