Malawian Black Spiced Milk Tea Tonic

A simple, fortifying spiced milk tea built on strong Malawian Black — ginger and cinnamon turn an everyday cup into a grounding morning ritual.

Malawi's thick, malty CTC tea was practically made for milk tea, and this version leans into that strength rather than masking it. Fresh ginger and a cracked cinnamon stick add warmth without turning the drink into a full spiced chai — it stays close to a classic, fortifying builder's cup.

Brewing the leaf strong and slightly longer than usual is key here; the spices and milk both need a robust base to stand up to, and a weak brew will simply taste diluted once milk is added.

This is the drink for a slow, grounding start to the day — the kind of tea ritual that asks you to sit for five minutes rather than gulp and go. The ginger adds a gentle internal warmth, and the malt notes come through even with milk and a touch of sweetness.

Have it first thing in the morning or as a mid-morning reset. Because Malawian Black runs on the stronger side for caffeine, it's best enjoyed earlier in the day rather than in the evening.

Ingredients

  • 2 tsp Malawian Black loose leaf (or 2 tea bags)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup whole milk (or oat milk)
  • 1-inch piece fresh ginger, sliced
  • 1 cinnamon stick, cracked
  • 1 tsp honey or brown sugar, to taste

How to make it

  1. 1Bring water, ginger, and cinnamon stick to a simmer in a small saucepan for 2 minutes.
  2. 2Add the tea leaves and simmer for 3–4 minutes until the liquor is dark and strong.
  3. 3Add the milk and bring back to a gentle simmer for 1 minute, without letting it boil over.
  4. 4Strain into a mug, sweeten to taste, and serve hot.
