Rooibos Chai
Chai
About this tea
Rooibos chai is a caffeine-free spin on the classic Indian masala chai, built on a base of South African red rooibos instead of black tea and layered with the warming chai spices — cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, and clove. The result is naturally sweet, smooth, and deeply comforting, with rooibos lending a honeyed, slightly woody richness that needs little or no added sugar. Because rooibos contains no caffeine, it offers all the cozy warmth and spice of a chai latte at any hour, making it a favorite evening and wind-down drink for those who love chai but want to skip the buzz.

Origin & Production
Rooibos chai brings together two worlds. Its base, rooibos (Aspalathus linearis), grows only in the Cederberg mountains north of Cape Town, South Africa, where the red-needled shrub is harvested, oxidized, and dried to produce the distinctive sweet red infusion. Onto this caffeine-free foundation are layered the spices of Indian masala chai — cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, clove, and often black pepper — a blend perfected over generations on the subcontinent. The marriage is a modern, global creation: the body of a beloved African herbal tea dressed in the warming spice tradition of India.
Production process
Rooibos harvest & curing
Rooibos is harvested in the Cederberg, then bruised and left to oxidize, which turns the green needles a deep red and develops its sweet, woody flavor before sun-drying.
Spice selection
Whole chai spices — cinnamon bark, dried ginger, green cardamom pods, cloves, and often black peppercorns — are selected for aroma and quality, the heart of any good chai blend.
Blending
The cured rooibos is blended with the crushed or whole spices in balanced proportions, so the sweetness of the rooibos carries the warmth of cinnamon and the lift of ginger and cardamom.
Packaging
The finished blend is sealed in airtight packaging — as loose blend or in tea bags — to keep the volatile spice aromatics and the sweet rooibos base fresh until brewing.
History & Tradition
Rooibos chai is a modern fusion, born from the meeting of South Africa's red bush tea tradition with the centuries-old masala chai culture of India.
Rooibos roots
The Khoisan people of South Africa's Cederberg region gathered and brewed wild rooibos for generations long before it was commercialized, valuing its sweet, caffeine-free infusion.
Masala chai tradition
Spiced milk infusions have a long history in India, where blends of warming spices were brewed for comfort and flavor. Masala chai as we know it became a beloved daily ritual across the subcontinent.
Rooibos commercialized
Rooibos cultivation and commercial production took off in South Africa in the early 20th century, turning the wild Cederberg shrub into a globally exported red herbal tea.
Caffeine-free fusion
As demand grew for caffeine-free alternatives, tea blenders began pairing rooibos with classic chai spices, creating rooibos chai as a soothing, spiced drink suitable for any time of day.
Café menus & lattes
Rooibos chai lattes appeared on café menus worldwide, offering the cozy spiced-latte experience without caffeine and cementing the blend as a popular evening and wellness drink.
Health Benefits
Completely caffeine-free
Built on rooibos rather than black tea, rooibos chai contains no caffeine, so you can enjoy the full warmth and spice of a chai in the evening without affecting your sleep.
Warming digestive spices
Ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, and clove are traditional after-meal spices long associated with comfort and warmth, making rooibos chai a soothing choice after dinner.
Antioxidant-rich rooibos
Rooibos is naturally rich in plant antioxidants such as aspalathin and is low in tannins, contributing to its reputation as a wholesome, gentle everyday herbal tea.
Naturally sweet, less sugar
Rooibos brings a honeyed, naturally sweet character that means rooibos chai often needs little or no added sugar, even as a comforting spiced latte.
Calming wind-down ritual
Caffeine-free and warmly spiced, rooibos chai makes an ideal evening drink to slow down with — a cozy ritual that signals the body it is time to relax.
