Spiced Dianhong Wellness Latte
Yunnan Dianhong simmered with cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger, finished with steamed milk and honey—a creamy, cocoa-tinged latte that warms from the inside out.
Yunnan Dianhong (Yunnan red, or 'golden tip' tea) is one of China's most beloved black teas. The large-leaf varietals from Yunnan that also produce pu-erh create a black tea that's malty, honeyed, with distinct notes of cocoa and sweet potato—much smoother and less astringent than Indian or Sri Lankan blacks.
Those natural cocoa notes are exactly what makes Dianhong a perfect base for a spiced wellness latte. Unlike English Breakfast or Assam (which need sugar and milk to feel comforting), Dianhong arrives at the table already tasting like dessert. The spices simply layer in warmth and circulation-boosting benefits without having to mask anything.
Cinnamon supports blood sugar regulation, cardamom soothes digestion, and a slice of fresh ginger adds anti-inflammatory warmth. Together they create a chai-adjacent profile that's actually distinct—lighter, more cocoa-forward, more elegant than masala chai.
Use whole spices and crack them lightly with the back of a knife before brewing—pre-ground spices in a wellness drink give a dusty texture and dull flavor. Simmer briefly rather than boiling; Dianhong handles heat well, but extended boiling pulls out tannins that compete with the sweetness.
Ingredients
- 5 g Yunnan Dianhong loose leaf (about 2 tsp)
- 250 ml fresh water
- 1 cinnamon stick, lightly cracked
- 3 green cardamom pods, lightly crushed
- 1 thin slice of fresh ginger
- 150 ml whole milk or oat milk
- 1 tbsp honey
- Pinch of cocoa powder for finishing (optional)
How to make it
- 1In a small saucepan, combine water, cinnamon stick, cardamom pods, and ginger slice. Bring to a gentle simmer and let infuse 2 minutes.
- 2Reduce heat to low. Add Dianhong leaves and steep 4 minutes off the heat (with lid on).
- 3Meanwhile, heat the milk in a separate small pan or with a frother until steaming and slightly foamy.
- 4Strain the tea into a large mug. Pour in the steamed milk and stir in the honey.
- 5Dust the top with a pinch of cocoa powder if using and serve hot.
