Warm Shui Xian Oolong with Honey and Roasted Date

A cozy, after-meal wellness brew that pairs Wuyi Shui Xian's roasted depth with a roasted date and a touch of honey—comforting, warming, and gently grounding.

Wuyi Shui Xian is a roasted rock oolong traditionally enjoyed after meals, and this warm preparation leans into that comforting role. Adding a roasted date and a little honey amplifies the tea's natural toasted-caramel sweetness, creating a soothing, full-bodied cup that feels like a warm hug.

The roasted date is the quiet hero here. Its deep, jammy sweetness echoes the charcoal warmth of the oolong, while a thin slice of ginger adds a gentle, warming lift that makes the drink feel especially settling after a rich dinner.

Brew the Shui Xian gently and don't oversteep—around 90 to 95°C for a short infusion keeps it smooth and woody rather than astringent. Rock oolong rewards multiple short steeps, so you can re-infuse the leaves several times across an evening.

Sip this slowly after a heavy meal or as a calming wind-down in the late afternoon. The combination of warmth, mild caffeine, and roasted sweetness makes it a grounding ritual rather than a stimulating jolt—comfort in a cup.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp Wuyi Shui Xian oolong leaves
  • 1 1/2 cups hot water (90–95°C)
  • 1 dried date, halved and lightly toasted in a dry pan
  • 1 thin slice fresh ginger
  • 1 tsp honey, or to taste
  • Pinch of cinnamon (optional)

How to make it

  1. 1Lightly toast the halved date in a dry pan for 1–2 minutes until fragrant.
  2. 2Place the Shui Xian leaves, toasted date, and ginger in a teapot or cup.
  3. 3Pour in the hot water and steep for 1–2 minutes, then strain.
  4. 4Stir in honey and a pinch of cinnamon if using. Sip warm and re-infuse the leaves for further cups.
