Thyme and Honey Throat Soother
A warm, peppery infusion of thyme, honey, and lemon — the classic Mediterranean home remedy for a scratchy throat or a meal that needs settling.
This is the cup Mediterranean grandmothers reach for the moment a throat starts feeling rough or a meal sits a little too heavy. Thyme's peppery, antiseptic-leaning aroma comes from thymol, and steeping it strong concentrates that effect into something you can feel on the back of the throat with the very first sip.
Honey does double duty here — it softens thyme's sharp edges into something rounder and more soothing, and its texture coats the throat as you drink. Together they turn what could be a harsh, medicinal cup into something genuinely comforting.
Steep thyme generously for this one, longer than you would for a casual afternoon cup. A full 8–10 minutes pulls out more of the thymol-rich oils, which is exactly what you want when the goal is comfort rather than a light, easy-drinking brew.
Sip slowly while it's still warm, ideally after a meal or before bed. This is a low-key ritual rather than a quick fix — let the steam and the warmth do as much work as the herb itself.
Ingredients
- 1 tbsp dried thyme (or 1 generous handful fresh thyme sprigs)
- 1 1/4 cups just-boiled water
- 1 tbsp honey
- Juice of half a lemon
- 1 thin slice fresh ginger (optional)
How to make it
- 1Place thyme in a mug or small teapot. Pour the just-boiled water over it.
- 2Cover and steep for 8–10 minutes — longer than a standard cup, to draw out more of the soothing oils.
- 3Strain into a clean cup, pressing gently on the leaves.
- 4Stir in honey and lemon juice while still warm. Add a slice of ginger if you'd like extra warmth, and sip slowly.
