Licorice Root and Fennel Comfort Tonic

A warming, naturally sweet tonic combining licorice root and fennel seed — a traditional after-meal sipper for stomach comfort, no sugar required.

Licorice root and fennel have been paired for generations across Mediterranean and Middle Eastern herbal traditions, both prized for their anise-adjacent flavor and their traditional role in soothing the stomach after eating. Together they create a tonic that feels purposeful rather than just pleasant.

The fennel seeds add a slightly cooler, more vegetal layer beneath the licorice's deep sweetness, rounding out the flavor so it reads more like a digestive ritual than a candy-sweet treat.

Because licorice root is naturally so sweet, this tonic needs no added sugar or honey — letting the root steep a few extra minutes draws out all the sweetness you need. A slice of fresh ginger can be added for those who want a touch more warmth.

Sip this slowly about twenty minutes after a meal, or in the early evening when you want something soothing and completely caffeine-free. It is a gentle way to wind down without affecting sleep.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp dried licorice root (cut and sifted) or 2 tea bags
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds, lightly crushed
  • 1.5 cups hot water (95°C)
  • 1 thin slice fresh ginger (optional)
  • Squeeze of lemon (optional)

How to make it

  1. 1Place licorice root and crushed fennel seeds (and ginger, if using) in a teapot or infuser.
  2. 2Pour hot water over the herbs and steep for 8–10 minutes, allowing the licorice's natural sweetness to fully develop.
  3. 3Strain into a mug.
  4. 4Add a small squeeze of lemon if desired, and sip warm.
