Does rooibos have caffeine? The honest answer
FindMeTea Editorial Team · 2026-09-04
No. Rooibos has no caffeine at all — not a little, none. It is not a low-caffeine tea and it is not decaffeinated: the rooibos shrub never produces caffeine in the first place, so its infusion is naturally caffeine-free at any strength, any steep time and any hour. In our catalog, every rooibos reads level 0 on the 0–3 caffeine scale, and no brewing decision changes that.
Not a tea plant at all
The reason is botanical. Everything properly called tea — green, black, white, oolong, matcha — comes from one plant, Camellia sinensis, which produces caffeine naturally. Rooibos comes from a different plant entirely: Aspalathus linearis, a shrub in the legume family, closer kin to lentils and beans than to the tea bush. It grows in the fynbos of South Africa's Cederberg region, and only there — the name has been legally protected in South Africa since 2013, and in 2021 rooibos became the first African food to receive the EU's protected designation of origin. Since the plant itself makes no caffeine, there is none to end up in your cup: what you brew is its needle-fine leaves and stems, cut and dried, nothing added and nothing taken away.
Caffeine-free is not the same as decaf
The distinction matters if zero is what you are after. Decaffeinated black or green tea starts life as regular tea leaf, full of caffeine, and a process then strips most of it out — most, because traces always remain, which is why decaf never reads a true zero on our caffeine ladder. Rooibos sits in the other category: naturally caffeine-free plants that never had anything to remove, alongside chamomile, peppermint and hibiscus. That is the honest difference between a very quiet cup and a silent one.
Red, green, vanilla, chai: still zero
Red rooibos, the classic, owes its coppery color to oxidation: the cut leaves are left to darken before drying, which builds the familiar sweet, earthy, smooth profile. Green rooibos skips that step — dried quickly to stay grassier and lighter — and it is exactly as caffeine-free, because it is the same plant. Blends follow one simple rule, the same one our whole catalog uses: the base sets the caffeine level, not the flavorings. Vanilla rooibos reads level 0. Rooibos chai reads level 0 too — cinnamon, ginger and cardamom bring warmth, not caffeine. The one label worth reading carefully is a blend that mixes rooibos with actual tea leaves, black or green: those do carry caffeine, from the tea half.
How to brew it, and why it is so forgiving
Our catalog brews rooibos hot: 203°F (95°C), 5 minutes, about 2.5 grams of leaf per cup — the same parameters as its vanilla blend, while rooibos chai asks for boiling water and a longer 7 minutes to open its spices. The exact numbers live on its catalog page. It is also a forgiving cup: forget it a while and it tends to deepen rather than turn harsh, so the 5-minute mark is a starting point, not an alarm. And it takes milk well — part of why it is the versatile classic of its family.
The caffeine-free corner of the map
Rooibos shares its Cape home with a sweeter cousin: honeybush, named for the honey scent of its yellow flowers, also caffeine-free, rounder and more dessert-like in the cup. We compare the two side by side in rooibos vs honeybush, and the whole region has its own page in our South Africa origin guide. If what brought you here is the hunt for a true evening cup, the rest of the level-0 shelf — chamomile, peppermint, hibiscus and more — lives in our guide to caffeine-free teas for bedtime.
The short version to keep: rooibos is not tea made gentle — it is a different plant altogether, one that never made caffeine to begin with. That makes the follow-up question, when can you drink it, the easiest one in the cupboard: whenever you like. Browse the full catalog by moment of day, and the level-0 shelf will always be open.
FAQ
Is rooibos a real tea?
Not in the strict sense: tea proper comes from Camellia sinensis, and rooibos is Aspalathus linearis, a South African legume shrub. In everyday speech it has earned the word anyway — it is brewed, poured and shared exactly like tea, which is why English also calls it red bush tea.
Does green rooibos have caffeine?
No. Green rooibos is the same plant as red rooibos, simply dried without the oxidation step that turns the classic version coppery. The plant produces no caffeine, so both are level 0.
Does rooibos chai have caffeine?
Not when the base is rooibos. Spices add warmth, not caffeine, so our rooibos chai reads level 0 — unlike classic masala chai, which is built on black tea and sits at the top of the ladder. The base leaf sets the level.
Is decaf tea the same as caffeine-free?
No. Decaf started with caffeine that was then mostly removed — traces remain, so it never reads a true zero. Rooibos, chamomile and peppermint are naturally caffeine-free: there was never anything to take out.
