Teatera
A private Chinese tea studio in Mount Roskill, visited by booking, whose sommelier sources single-origin leaf directly from the mountains of China.
This is not a shop you walk into. You book an hour, sit with the sommelier, and leave with the 50 g you already know you like.
Teatera is a tea studio at 369 Mt Albert Road in Mount Roskill, and its own site calls it a private one: bookings are required for tastings and sessions, available every day from 10:30 in the morning to 10 at night, and no walk-in shop hours are published. Yue, the tea sommelier, personally visits tea mountains and valleys across China to select leaf among the six main types, green, yellow, white, oolong, black and dark, and the name comes from terra, the earth that feeds each leaf.
A session costs NZ$ 20 per person per hour, or NZ$ 58 for a private tea room whose first hour includes tea and pastries, and the studio also sells incense and teaware and takes part in cultural events around the city, from a Tea for Harmony afternoon with the China Cultural Center in Auckland to market days in Northcote and at the university. The shop online carries Chinese teas only, most of them in 50 g: a Keemun Golden Needle, a Huangshan Maofeng and a Phoenix dancong Mi Lan Xiang at NZ$ 45 each.
The rest of the list is where the studio earns its place on this page: a Huoshan yellow tea at NZ$ 35 the 50 g, a category almost no Auckland shop stocks, a Taiping Houkui in a 125 g pack at NZ$ 68, and an Anhua dark tea sold in a 10 g pack at NZ$ 10, the smallest and cheapest step into a family of tea most people have never tried. Several Wuyi rock teas and a Lapsang were only available in single-serve sachets on the day we read the prices. Orders over NZ$ 98 ship free anywhere in New Zealand.
