Cardamom-Ginger Digestive Tonic

A warming, after-meal tonic that pairs cardamom's citrusy spice with fresh ginger — a centuries-old digestive duo from South Asian and Middle Eastern kitchens.

Cardamom and ginger are a digestive pairing with deep roots across South Asian and Middle Eastern home remedies, and this tonic leans into that tradition rather than reinventing it. The two spices share an overlapping warmth but hit different notes — ginger is sharp and peppery, cardamom is rounder and more citrus-floral — so together they feel layered rather than one-note.

Crushing the cardamom pods just before steeping matters here. Whole, unbroken pods barely flavor the water; cracked open, they release the volatile oils almost immediately, which is why this tonic comes together in minutes rather than requiring a long simmer.

Keep the steep relatively short — about 5 minutes. Cardamom can turn slightly resinous if it sits in hot water too long, dulling the bright citrus top note that makes it so refreshing in the first place.

This is the cup to reach for about twenty minutes after a heavy meal, or first thing on a sluggish morning. It carries no caffeine, so it slots in just as comfortably at 9pm as it does at 9am.

Ingredients

  • 6 green cardamom pods, cracked
  • 1-inch piece fresh ginger, sliced thin
  • 1 1/2 cups hot water (95°C)
  • 1 tsp honey
  • Squeeze of lemon juice
  • Small cinnamon stick (optional)

How to make it

  1. 1Place cracked cardamom pods, ginger slices, and cinnamon stick (if using) in a mug or small teapot.
  2. 2Pour hot water over the spices and cover to trap the aroma.
  3. 3Steep for 5 minutes, then strain into a cup.
  4. 4Stir in honey and a squeeze of lemon juice. Serve warm.
