Pantjoran Tea House
A Chinese tea house and restaurant in Glodok, the old Chinatown of Jakarta, that sells Jin Jun Mei, rock oolong and aged pu-erh from a shop of its own.
Open at seven on weekends, with gaiwans and clay teapots on the shelf next to the teas they are meant for.
Pantjoran Tea House stands at Jl. Pancoran Raya No. 4-6 in Glodok, the Chinatown of old Jakarta, and describes itself as an authentic journey into tea in the heart of Pancoran. It is a tea house and restaurant first: a food menu, a tea menu and long hours, from eight to eight on weekdays and from seven in the morning to half past eight at night on weekends and holidays. Phone orders go to (021) 6905904.
The merchandise shop sells the teas the house pours, and the list is short and Chinese. Jin Jun Mei, the golden-bud Fujian black, is Rp 82,500 for 30 g; a Yunnan Dian Hong is Rp 192,500 for 50 g; a green tea is Rp 175,560 for 21 g; Lapsang Souchong comes in 22 sachets of 5 g at Rp 385,000; a Qian Li Xiang rock oolong in 24 sachets of 7 g at Rp 550,000; and a 2015 Menghai V93 shou pu-erh is Rp 940,000 for 100 g, the most expensive tea on the Jakarta page.
The same shop stocks gaiwans and clay teapots, so the leaf and the vessel can be bought together, and the tea house is the place to try a pot before deciding. Stock is small, a handful of units per tea, which is a tea house selling from its own cupboard rather than a warehouse. Several more teas, including a Tieguanyin and pu-erh cakes, appear on the list without stock at the time of writing.
