TeBella Tea Company
A Tampa tea company opened in 2010, with its flagship on Davis Islands and a counter at Oxford Exchange, selling single-origin teas and house blends from 2 oz.
Every tea here starts at two ounces, so even a reserve oolong from a Taiwanese garden is a seventeen-dollar experiment rather than a commitment to a whole pound.
TeBella Tea was opened in 2010 by Abigail StClair, who worked a series of jobs, among them whale trainer at the Mystic Aquarium, before turning a lifelong passion for tea into her business. Since then she has made tea-buying trips to Japan, China, Sri Lanka and India, and the company has grown from one small shop to four locations in three cities, along with a wholesale business that supplies tea to more than 140 cafés, restaurants and hotels.
Two of those locations are in Tampa. The flagship is at 227 E Davis Blvd, on Davis Islands; the second is TeBella's counter inside Oxford Exchange, at 420 W Kennedy Blvd. The other two are in St. Petersburg and Sarasota. The full range is also sold online, in 2, 4, 8 and 16 oz bags.
The catalogue covers black, green, white and oolong teas, pu-erh, mate, herbal infusions and rooibos, alongside house blends and a line of single-origin teas. Many product pages name the estate or garden: a second-flush Golden Assam from the Aideobarie estate, a Tie Guan Yin from the Pingzhoucun garden in Anxi, an organic Silver Needle from Fujian. Masala Chai at US$ 9 for 2 oz is the easiest way in.

The one worth the trip
GABA Oolong
from US$ 17 · 2 oz
A GABA oolong from the gardens of Ming Jian, in Nantou County, Taiwan, filed in TeBella's Reserve Collection: the leaves are processed in a sealed, oxygen-free container, a technique first developed in Japan in the 1980s. It is the most unusual tea in this list and the one to ask about at the Davis Islands flagship.
