Melbourne's tea splits between the city and the hills. In town, Oriental Teahouse, the yum cha house that began as a tea shop on Chapel Street and opened its South Yarra teahouse in 2003, sells the Chinese teas it pours by the 50 g bag, upstairs at 455 Chapel Street and at 378 Little Collins Street; on the same street, T2, the tea company that opened its first shop in Fitzroy in 1996, keeps a boutique at number 269 with its boxed loose leaf. An hour east, in Olinda, Tea Leaves stocks more than 300 teas priced by the 100 g bag. Prices below are in Australian dollars, GST included.

The house pours some twenty teas by the pot and sells the same leaf to take home in 50, 100 and 250 g bags: Iron Buddha oolong from A$ 14 and Black Dragon oolong from A$ 11 for 50 g, Long Jing from A$ 20, Jasmine Green and Gen Mai Cha from A$ 11, a Sou Mei white from A$ 12.50 and an Orange Pekoe black at A$ 18 for 100 g, next to the founder's own blends and a shelf of Zi Sha mugs and cast-iron pots. The online shop ships the same bags.

The loose leaf comes in boxed cubes: English Breakfast at A$ 18 for 100 g, Japanese Sencha at A$ 26, China Jasmine at A$ 22, a plain oolong at A$ 18, Pai Mu Tan at A$ 22 for 50 g and the house chai at A$ 22 for 100 g. Online orders can be collected in store, and the city has three more T2 shops, at Emporium, Melbourne Central and Fitzroy.
