Seven regions, seven cups: the shop recreates a Sri Lankan tasting room and pours one tea from each district before you choose a pack.

MITSUTEA began on 20 April 2002 as an online Ceylon tea shop and now has a counter on the ground floor of Maison Libre, 2-69 Ishikawacho, a minute's walk from JR Ishikawacho station. Its owner, Mitsuyo Nakae, left an office job after a cup of milk tea in England, moved to Sri Lanka, trained at a tea garden and lived in the island's seven producing regions following the quality seasons; she has written four books on Ceylon tea and holds a letter of recommendation from the Sri Lanka Tea Board. Everything is imported directly and nothing is flavoured.

About twenty Sri Lankan teas are on the shelf at any time, each numbered and named by district and estate: an 851 Nuwara Eliya BOPF from Pedro Estate and an 852 Dimbula BOP from Somerset Estate at ¥1,512 for 70 g, an 849 Kandy FBOP from Doteloya Valley at ¥1,512 for 50 g, an 824 Ruhuna OP leaf from the Pothotuwa factory at ¥1,512 for 45 g, and a 2026 quality-season Uva Pekoe from Aislaby Estate at ¥1,620 for 50 g. Prices include tax, and several teas also come as tea bags.

The shop is a tasting room before it is a shop: a paid tasting of seven teas, one from each region, runs from noon and can be booked, and the staff, most of them trained in Sri Lanka, include instructors of the house's Ceylon Tea School, which also teaches online. There is no eat-in. The company runs eight-day tea tours of Sri Lanka, sells wholesale to cafés and pâtisseries from small quantities, and opens weekdays from 12:00 to 17:00, weekends and holidays from 11:00 to 18:00, closed Mondays.

The one worth the trip

862 Quality Uva 2026 Aislaby Estate Pekoe 50g

¥ 1,620 · 50 g

A quality-season Uva from Aislaby Estate, harvest 2026, in Pekoe grade: Uva's dry season is short and the teas from it are what the district is known for, so a current-year pack from a named estate is the thing to carry home. Taste it in the seven-region flight first; it is the cup that stands out.
