Bird & Blend Tea Co. Brighton
The tea blender's home-town shops: a flagship on Gardner Street in the North Laine and a second counter in the Kings Road Arches on the beach.
Every branch of this chain has the wall of 100 blends. Brighton is the town the company calls home, and the pink pouch on the counter only makes sense here.
Bird & Blend Tea Co. describes Brighton as its home town, and it keeps two shops here. The flagship Tea Mixology store is at 41 Gardner Street in the North Laine, next to the Komedia, and opens Monday to Friday 10:00–18:00, Saturday 10:00–18:30 and Sunday 10:30–17:30. The second sits on the seafront at 38-39 Kings Road Arches, by the i360 and the Upside Down House; its hours, Monday to Friday 10:30–17:00, Saturday 10:00–18:00 and Sunday 10:30–16:00, are described by the company as a guide that can change with the weather. In both, tea mixologists walk you along the wall of 100 loose leaf blends and make iced teas and tea lattes at the counter.
The catalogue is blends rather than single-estate leaf, priced on one grid. The classics are 6,00 £ for a 50 g pouch: Great British Cuppa, the house English Breakfast; Builder's Breakfast Brew, the strongest of them; Assam Earl Grey, a blend the company says a co-founder's family drank at home for years; Earl Grey Creme, with its vanilla note, in the range since day one; and Sunny Sencha with sunflower petals. Each also comes as a 20 g taster at 3,50 £ and in 150 g and 300 g pouches. Coconut Milk Oolong is 10,50 £ the 50 g, and the Pure Grade Ceremonial Matcha, the base of all the flavoured matchas, is 22,00 £ for a 30 g tin.
The Brighton pouch is Brighton Rock Tea, which both shop pages present as the signature Brighton loose leaf: a caffeine-free herbal blend that brews pink, inspired by the sticks of rock sold on the pier, in a single 50 g pouch at 8,50 £. It began as an oolong blend and was rewritten as an infusion, and the company gives half the profits of this store blend to the charity its Brighton shops choose. The Gardner Street store also hosts the chain's ticketed mixers, hour-long tastings that end with two 50 g pouches to take home, and the company says the shop is accessible to wheelchair users, with no customer toilet on site.

What to buy here
English Breakfast
Great British Cuppa Tea
from £ 6 · 50 g pouch
The house English Breakfast, a balanced blend of whole black leaves the company sells as good with milk or without, in the 50 g pouch, a 20 g taster, a 150 g tin and pyramid bags. The pouch to start with if the wall looks like a sweet shop.

Earl Grey Creme Tea
from £ 6 · 50 g pouch
Earl Grey with bergamot and a note of vanilla, in the range since the company's first day and its best-selling blend by its own account. The one to take home if you want the house style without the novelty.
See our page on this tea →Matcha
Pure Grade Ceremonial Matcha
from £ 22 · 30 g tin
The unflavoured ceremonial matcha, shaded two weeks before harvest, in a 30 g tin with a 100 g refill pouch behind it. Every flavoured matcha on the wall is built on this one, so it is also the honest way to judge them.

The one worth the trip
Brighton Rock Tea
£ 8.50 · 50 g pouch
Brighton Rock Tea, the blend both Brighton shop pages present as the city's signature loose leaf: a caffeine-free, minty herbal that brews pink, named after the sticks of rock on the pier, in a single 50 g pouch. The mixologists suggest cold-brewing it in coconut milk. Every other pouch on the wall is in every other branch; this is the one that only makes sense here, and half its profits go to a charity the Brighton shops choose.
