ChaiChun

The Delhi counter of a Siliguri tea company, in M Block Market, where every tea on the list is named by its estate and its flush.

Singbulli, Okayti, Rohini: here a tea is sold under the name of the garden that made it, not under the name of a blend someone invented.

ChaiChun is a tea company from Siliguri, in West Bengal, with a Delhi shop at M37 in the M Block Market of Greater Kailash 1. Its founder, Rajeev Baid, began his career as a tea vendor at railway stations and bus stops in the Kishanganj area of Bihar, and built the company from there. The parent business, Evergreen, has its own manufacturing unit in West Bengal, and the retail boutiques came afterwards — which is why this counter sells what the group makes and buys rather than what a distributor offers it.

The teas come from estates around Siliguri, the Dooars, Assam and Darjeeling, and a tasting panel chooses each lot. The list is short and entirely single-origin: Singbulli Darjeeling second flush at ₹ 1,000 for 100 g, an Assam Vintage at ₹ 1,570 for 250 g, Okayti Virgin Green second flush at ₹ 700 and an Oolong Prestige at ₹ 1,500, both per 100 g. Two Darjeeling whites close it — Okayti Silver Needle at ₹ 900 and Rohini Moonlight at ₹ 800 — plus a Rooibos Vanilla at ₹ 1,800 for 150 g.

It is a manufacturer's shop, and the prices show it: nothing here is an entry-level tea, and the 100 g pack is the standard unit, with the Assam going up to 250 g and the rooibos to 150 g. The company keeps boutiques in other Indian cities and ships nationwide, so the Greater Kailash counter works as the place to read the labels — estate, flush, year — before deciding which garden you want a hundred grams of.

What to buy here

  • Darjeeling

    Singbulli Darjeeling Tea, Second Flush

    ₹ 1,000 · 100 g

One garden, one flush, on the label: Singbulli in second flush is the clearest example of what this counter is for.

  • Green tea

    Okayti Virgin Green, Second Flush

    ₹ 700 · 100 g

A second flush green from Okayti, the same Darjeeling estate that supplies this counter's silver needle, and the cheapest way into the list.

  • Oolong tea

    Oolong Prestige

    ₹ 1,500 · 100 g

The only oolong on a list otherwise built out of Darjeeling black and Darjeeling white, and the only tea here that is not named after its estate.

The one worth the trip

Okayti Silver Needle, Second Flush (Darjeeling white)

₹ 900 · 100 g

This counter carries two Darjeeling whites at once, from two different gardens: Okayti Silver Needle and Rohini Moonlight, both second flush and both by the 100 g. Buying them together is the rare chance to taste what changes when only the estate changes, with the style, the season and the weight held constant. That comparison is the reason to cross the city for M Block Market.
