Eastern Tea Bar
A family tea shop on Gottingen Street that buys small batches from farmers abroad and sells them in 25 g bags with names worth reading.
A shop that writes a story for every tea, and sells it in a bag small enough to try them all.
Eastern Tea Bar is a family business bringing loose tea to Atlantic Canada. Its first shop is at 2093 Gottingen Street in Halifax's North End, run by Nick; a second, Cat Tale Eclectics, sells books, vinyl and tea on Main Street in Mahone Bay. Since 2019 the family has worked with farmers around the world to bring in small-batch tea and matcha, and its next sourcing trip is planned for November 2026, filmed for its own YouTube channel.
Every tea gets a name and a note. Smokestacks is a Lapsang Souchong chosen for a smoke that sits on the tea rather than hiding it; Srùbag, a Gaelic word for a cup of tea with something to eat, is an Eastern Beauty oolong; Peach Body is a Huang Zhi Xiang Dancong from Fenghuangshan, roasted to a peachy, earthy finish. Most come in 25 g bags, which keeps the more unusual teas affordable to try, and the product pages list harvest, region and cultivar.
Matcha has its own shelf: the 2026 spring harvest of an Okumidori and Tenmyou blend from Uji, a ceremonial grade meant to be whisked straight, next to a hojicha powder. The shop also runs a monthly tea club, sells wholesale, and keeps brewing pages for each style on its site. For a first visit, buy three 25 g bags from three different countries and compare them at home.
