LockCha Tea House (樂茶軒)
A 1991 loose-leaf shop that grew into a teahouse inside Hong Kong Park: single-harvest Chinese tea, vegetarian dim sum and a second home in Tai Kwun.
Most tea shops in this city are a counter. LockCha is a park, a gallery building and a Sunday afternoon of Chinese music with a pot of Phoenix oolong.
LockCha started in 1991 as a loose-leaf shop, founded by Wing-Chi Ip. In 2003 it opened its first teahouse inside Hong Kong Park, on the ground floor of the K.S. Lo Gallery on Cotton Tree Drive, in Admiralty. A second teahouse with the flagship shop followed in Tai Kwun, on Hollywood Road in Central. Both serve vegetarian dim sum alongside more than a hundred teas, and the Tai Kwun one adds tea cocktails and the house's own tea beers.
The teas are single-harvest Chinese leaf, sold in packs of 50 and 75 g. The red-tea shelf holds a Lapsang Souchong and a Tianshan gongfu; the greens run from a Lion Peak pre-Qingming Longjing to a jasmine-scented green sold in 100 g. The oolongs cross the strait: a fragrant Anxi Tieguanyin, an Alishan from Taiwan and a Phoenix Dan Cong from Guangdong. At the dark end sit an aged brown pu-erh and an old Liubao, both in 75 g.
The park teahouse is also a stage. Chinese music has played there on Sundays since 2001 and Cantonese music on Saturdays since 2008; on weekdays the house gives private tea classes. The website is the other door in: local delivery is free from HK$300 and overseas orders ship from HK$800. If you only have one afternoon, make it a Sunday in the park, with dim sum on the table and a pot of something from the oolong shelf.
