East Java & Co
Organic single-estate teas from the Mount Halimun highlands of West Java, sold in 50 g pouches and tins from a counter inside a Kemang grocery.
One estate, three teas: the same Halimun leaf made into a black, a green and an oolong, each at the same price in the same paper pouch.
East Java & Co sells organic single-estate teas grown in the Mount Halimun highlands of West Java, plus organic blends and herbal infusions, under the company PT Mata Gunung Altazor. Its Jakarta counter is inside Papilion's Market Place at Jl. Kemang Raya No. 45 AA in Kemang, South Jakarta, and the same range is sold online with a WhatsApp line for questions. The leaf comes as loose tea in tins or paper pouches, as cotton tea bags in cubes and tins, and as gift chests.
Every tea is offered in a 50 g paper pouch and a 50 g tin that costs more, so the pouch is the price to compare. The estate's own black, green and oolong are Rp 120,000 each; a Java Breakfast is Rp 70,000; an Earl Grey and a jasmine tea are Rp 100,000; a Java Chai, the black tea blended with spices, is Rp 110,000; and Silver Needle, the white tea made of buds alone, is Rp 440,000. A white tea, a camomile and a green tea with mint from the same garden complete the range.
The point of the shelf is the comparison: a black, a green and an oolong from one garden, processed three ways, at one price, which is the clearest way to taste what processing does to a leaf. Cotton tea bags of the same teas come in boxes of 10 and 15 for the office, and the gift chests combine several. The counter keeps the grocery's hours; the site does not publish its own.

The one worth the trip
Organic Silver Needle Tea
from Rp 440,000 · 50 g
Silver Needle from Mount Halimun: a bud-only white tea from a Javanese estate, when almost every Silver Needle on the market is from Fujian. It is the dearest pouch on the counter and the one that says most about what the garden can do; the Kemang counter lets you see the buds before you pay for them.
