A family-run tea house on Granville Street in Marpole since 2001, with roots in 1955 Hong Kong, over 200 teas and sizes from 50 g to a kilo.
The same Keemun is sold in 50 g and in a kilo, which makes this counter useful both for a first taste and for a household that already knows its tea.
Aroma Tea House is a family-run shop whose roots go back to 1955 in Hong Kong. In 2001 the family brought that heritage to Marpole, and the shop has been at 8059 Granville Street since, with tea education as part of the job. The service is personal: in-shop tastings, recommendations fitted to each customer, and explanations of what is in the cup. The shop is open six days a week, and on Sundays and public holidays it opens by appointment.
The range covers over 200 teas: white, green, black, oolong, pu-erh, Taiwanese high mountain teas and Japanese matcha. The Chinese classics come in a ladder of sizes, often 50, 100, 225 and 500 g and a kilo, so the Keemun from Qimen in Anhui, the West Lake Dragon Well from Hangzhou, the sun-dried White Peony from Fujian and a loose Yunnan pu-erh can be bought for a week or for a year. A Taiwanese Jade Oolong and an organic Mao Feng, with an 8 g sample, round it out.
Teaware takes up a good part of the shop: gaiwans, Yixing teapots, glass and porcelain sets, tea pets and accessories for gongfu and everyday brewing, all packaged with gifting in mind. The shop's site lists tea appreciation workshops and a tea club, and the business also sells wholesale, including Japanese matcha stocked locally in large quantities and tea powders such as hojicha, Earl Grey, jasmine and roasted oolong for drinks and baking.

Organic Mao Feng

An organic green from Fujian with a roasted-chestnut aroma and a sweet aftertaste, and the one tea on this list sold as an 8 g sample before the 50 g bag. Pair that with a counter that pours tastings and it is the easiest way into a shelf of 200 teas.
