Vancouver's tea shops sit in three pockets: two long-running Chinese tea counters in Chinatown, a pair of tea bars on the west side and on Main Street whose owners buy direct from farms in China, Taiwan and Japan, and a family shop on Granville Street in Marpole. Prices below are in Canadian dollars, read on each shop's own site; most sell loose leaf from 25 g, 40 g or 50 g, and Treasure Green also sells small tasters.

Loose leaf starts at 40 g: an 1875 Keemun at CA$ 18, a steamed Ming-style green at CA$ 22, a Ming Jian GABA oolong from Taiwan at CA$ 26 and a lightly roasted Shan Lin Xi at CA$ 37, plus a Kahibari Assam at CA$ 27 for 80 g and a 2010 Gong Mei white at CA$ 20 for 50 g. It stays open until 8 pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

The tasters let you try a tea before committing to 100 g.

Of the five shops here it is the least expensive way to keep everyday Chinese tea in the cupboard.
