Echinacea, Ginger and Rosehip Shot with Honey and Lemon

Echinacea, ginger, lemon and rosehip brewed double strength and reduced, then mixed with fresh ginger juice, raw honey, lemon and a pinch of black pepper: a sharp, concentrated 60 ml shot.

Wellness shots have become a daily ritual at juice bars worldwide, and part of the appeal is the format: 60 ml of something sharp is easier to finish than a full mug of strongly spiced herbal tea. This version uses our immunity blend as the base and concentrates it down.

Echinacea is the headline herb, with a long history of folk use in North America and Europe. Ginger brings the heat, rosehip a tart, fruity edge, and lemon balances everything with bright acidity. What Europe's medicines agency and a Cochrane review actually say about echinacea and ginger is on the Immunity Blend page, with sources; this shot is a recipe, not a dose of either.

Brew the tea twice as strong as usual, then reduce it on the stovetop until it turns syrupy. Combined with fresh ginger juice and raw honey, the shot becomes intense enough that 60 ml is plenty.

Have one in the morning on a cold day, knock it back like an espresso, then chase it with a glass of water—the intensity is the point. Echinacea is the ingredient to keep to short runs and to skip if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or allergic to daisy-family plants; the Immunity Blend page has the details and an echinacea-free version.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp immunity blend (echinacea + ginger + lemon + rosehip; or 3 tea bags)
  • 250 ml hot water (just off the boil)
  • 1-inch piece fresh ginger, grated and squeezed for juice
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 tbsp raw honey
  • Pinch of black pepper (for a little extra heat)

How to make it

  1. 1Steep the immunity blend in hot water for 10 minutes—cover the cup to keep volatiles in.
  2. 2Strain and return the strong tea to a small saucepan. Simmer over low heat until reduced by half (about 5 minutes). Cool slightly.
  3. 3Grate fresh ginger onto a clean cloth, then squeeze the cloth over a bowl to extract the ginger juice. Add ginger juice and lemon juice to the reduced tea.
  4. 4Stir in raw honey and a pinch of black pepper until honey dissolves. Pour into a small shot glass.
  5. 5Drink in one or two gulps and chase with water if needed.
