The spices are in the name, but the tea wall is the longer one: 175 teas against 100 blends, with a Ti Kuan Yin under eight dollars and a Milk Oolong for the day you want to splurge.

The Spice Hut was founded in 2004 in Bellingham, Washington, and describes itself as a small, woman-owned business that crafts spice blends and loose-leaf tea medleys. Its retail store is at 131 W Kellogg Road, in the north of the city, and opens seven days a week: Monday to Saturday from 11am to 6pm and Sunday from 11am to 5pm. Online orders can be shipped anywhere in the United States, free over US$ 50, or collected at the store at no charge.

The shop lists more than 175 teas and 100 hand-blended spices. Loose leaf comes in 2 oz, 4 oz, 8 oz and 1 lb pouches, and the 2 oz prices are among the lowest on this site: English Breakfast and Genmaicha at US$ 6, Earl Grey at US$ 6.74, an organic chamomile at US$ 6.59 and a Ti Kuan Yin oolong at US$ 7.94. An organic matcha comes in a 1 oz tin at US$ 15.59, and the house brands, The First Sip of Tea and The First Sip of Chai, cover the blends and the tea-bag boxes of 16.

Beyond the basics there is a long list of origins and a Milk Oolong at US$ 29.69 the 2 oz, the most expensive leaf in the range. The shop also runs a wholesale and bulk programme, sells gift cards in store, and keeps a virtual tour of the retail floor on its website for anyone who wants to see the jars before driving out to Kellogg Road.
