Berlin's own tea concept store: pure teas in numbered caddies, a shop in Mitte, a counter inside KaDeWe and tastings you book by ticket.
P&T sells tea the way a good record shop sells music: a curated wall, a number on every tin and someone to play you a track first.
Paper & Tea, P&T for short, runs two Berlin sites listed on its own store page: the Mitte shop at Alte Schönhauser Straße 50, open Monday to Saturday from 11:00 to 19:00, and a space inside KaDeWe at Tauentzienstraße 21-24, open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 20:00. The same page lists stores in Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Hannover, Leipzig, Stuttgart, Munich, Vienna, Zürich and Amsterdam, which makes the two Berlin shops the home branches of a chain that started in this city.
The teas carry numbers and names. Queen's Grace is a first-flush Darjeeling plucked in mid-March; Nandana is an Assam the company itself calls possibly the mildest in the world; Imperial Dragon is a Long Jing from West Lake near Hangzhou; Milk River is a handmade milky oolong from northern Thailand; Golden Earl is bergamot oil on Yunnan golden-bud black tea. Each comes in a caddy of between 40 and 130 g, and most also in a 250 g refill bag or a box of 15 tea bags.
The Mitte shop doubles as a classroom. Its ticket page lists 30 € tastings several times a week through October: a matcha and hojicha workshop in German and English, The World of Tea, Chinese Teas, Green Teas and Traditional Tea Blends, each with the tasting included in the price. The accessories range covers the matcha side properly, with bowls in three glazes, bamboo whisks, whisk holders, a strainer and a kyusu pot, so anyone who leaves with the powder can also leave with the tools.

The one worth the trip
Assam Tea Nandana (Caddy)

An Assam that the shop describes as possibly the mildest in the world, with milky sweetness and honey notes, meant to be drunk without milk or sugar. Most Berlin shops sell Assam as the strong morning tea; this one sells it as the delicate afternoon cup, and tasting the difference is the reason to go to Alte Schönhauser Straße rather than order the caddy online.
