Wendigo Tea Co.
A Cincinnati tea company founded in 2013 that names each tea after a monster and pours it at a tea bar on Elm Street, next to Findlay Market.
Bigfoot is the black, Nessy the jasmine pearls, Mothman the Malawian white: a short list of well-chosen leaf hidden behind a comic-book costume.
Wendigo Tea was established in 2013 by founder Sky White, who still signs the site, and calls itself 'based in the very strange land of Cincinnati, Ohio'. Every tea is a creature: Bigfoot Black Tea, Black Shuck Earl Grey, Yeti and Jackalope white teas, King Dragon and Skunk Ape oolongs, Kappa Matcha. It pours them at the Wendigo Tea Bar at 1811 Elm Street, next to Findlay Market, open Wednesday to Sunday, and it runs a tasting room by appointment at 3116 Warsaw Avenue on the Warsaw Avenue Creative Campus in Price Hill.
Behind the costumes the sourcing is specific. Nessy Jasmine Tea is an imperial-grade jasmine dragon pearl from Fuding in Fujian, scented five times, $22 for 2.25 oz. MOTHMAN Cocoon White Tea is a hand-rolled Zomba pearl white from the Satemwa estate in Malawi, $30 for 2 oz, and the Jackalope white comes from the same estate. FireBird Chai is a spicy masala on an Indian estate black, $25 for 2 oz, and Sandman is the herbal blend for the end of the day, $22 for 2 oz. Bags come in 2 to 2.5 oz, tins in 5.5 oz and 'Mega' pounds.
Skin Walker Ranch is the company's open-source research box: small lots of unusual teas sold in 2 oz packs at $20 with a live tasting video for each, currently a post-fermented Satemwa dark tea and a Japanese houjicha. Gift sets pair the monsters (The Blackest of Black, Everyone Was Gong Fu Fighting), the teaware shelf runs from a porcelain gaiwan and Yixing clay pots to a Wendigo tea-slug tea pet, and there are hoodies and tees. Personalised tastings for two to eight people are booked online. Orders ship nationally.

The one worth the trip
Skin Walker Ranch: Houjicha (Roasted Green Tea)
US$ 20 · 2 oz
Skin Walker Ranch is the box you cannot plan for: whatever odd lot the company is testing that month, in 2 oz packs with a live tasting video. Right now it is a Japanese houjicha, roasted green tea with a toasty, low-caffeine cup, and a post-fermented dark tea from Malawi. Go to the Elm Street bar, ask what is in the box this week, and drink it there first.
