Whittard of Chelsea's Manchester shop is at 6 Market Street, and the company's own page for it is brief: a space on the historic street filled with teas, coffees and hot chocolates, open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 19:00 and Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00. The page also says the shop is wheelchair accessible through a double door with step-free access and a slight incline inside, and that in-store staff are there to guide you. The chain lists a second Greater Manchester store at the Trafford Centre, outside the city; this is the one you reach on foot from Piccadilly Gardens.
The company dates itself to 1886, when, by its own account, Walter Whittard opened a shop on Fleet Street at 25 with the philosophy of buying the best; it moved to Chelsea in 1941 after losing its warehouse in the Blitz, took the Chelsea name decades later and opened its Covent Garden flagship in 1999. In Manchester that history translates into a shelf of pre-packed loose leaf. Most teas come in a 100 g pouch and a caddy: English Breakfast, Earl Grey and Darjeeling cost £10.95 the pouch, Spiced Chai £12.95, the Japanese Sencha Asagiri £15.95 and Milk Oolong £19.95; Silver Needle is £19.95 for 50 g.
Two things make the chain easy to shop. Orders placed online can be collected at Market Street, and every product page carries a Find & Collect in Store button. And the Taste Promise, printed on the store page, says that a tea that is not to your taste can be returned in store for a full refund or exchange. The matcha is a ceremonial grade in a 30 g pack at £22.00, the same price as the independents' tins, and the Darjeeling at £10.95 is the cheapest single-origin leaf on this page. Caddies cost £4.00 to £5.00 more than the pouch of the same tea.

Silver Needle Loose Leaf Tea
