A Bronzeville apothecary and wellness cafe with more than 200 dried herbs, a small bulk corner of classic teas by the ounce, and an express counter in the Third Ward.
The Assam on the menu and the Assam in the bulk jar are the same leaf. Drink a cup at the counter, then buy the ounce — that is the whole tasting, and it costs less than the cup.
HoneyBee Sage was founded in 2018 by Angela Mallett and, by its own account, began in the Sherman Phoenix marketplace before moving to its own building at 1819 North Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Bronzeville. The shop is an apothecary with a wellness cafe inside: more than 200 dried herbs in packaged and bulk formats, and a menu of herbal teas and alcohol-free cocktails poured at the counter. Both sites are card only; the site says no cash is accepted.
The second address is a 500-square-foot express counter in the Marshall Building on East Buffalo Street in the Historic Third Ward, open Tuesday to Saturday until 16:00. It is grab-and-go: teas by the cup, sandwiches, packaged teas, honey and accessories, with no apothecary services and no bulk jars. For the by-the-ounce shopping, the MLK Drive shop is the one to visit, and it keeps the longer hours, seven days a week.
Tea is a small part of a shop built around herbs, and the classic corner reflects that: an Assam, a sencha, a rooibos chai and an unusual pu-erh white in bulk by the ounce, plus a 50 g packet of jasmine pearls. The cafe menu lists the same Assam, an Earl Grey, the sencha and yerba mate by the cup, so you can taste before you weigh. The Earl Grey and the packaged rooibos were sold out online the day we looked.

The one worth the trip
Jasmine Pearls - Packaged

Hand-rolled jasmine pearls in a sealed 50 g packet are the one thing here that is not weighed from a jar, and the one to bring as a gift: the pearls unfurl in the cup, the scent is real flowers rather than flavouring, and fifty grams is about twenty pots.
