Purple Cane One Utama

Purple Cane was established in 1987 and has grown into fourteen stores across Malaysia, from the Shaw Parade headquarters and Tea Art Learning Centre in Kuala Lumpur to Penang, Melaka and Johor. The Petaling Jaya outlet is at LG 119 on the lower ground floor of 1 Utama Shopping Centre, on Lebuh Bandar Utama, and keeps the mall's hours, 10am to 10:30pm every day of the week. It is a retail tea shop rather than one of the chain's tea restaurants, and online orders can be collected here within eight working days.

The shelf is Chinese and Taiwanese tea in 50 to 100 g packs, with pu-erh cakes, boxes of thirty Cane's teabags, flower teas, tea mooncakes and teaware around it. The entry prices are a Zhejiang green at RM 27 and a lychee-scented black at RM 38 the 100 g; the oolongs run from Dong Ding at RM 52.50 and Tie Guan Yin at RM 65 the 85 g through Da Hong Pao at RM 69.90 to Alishan at RM 159; a 2007 aged Dian Hong costs RM 69, a 2026 pre-rain Long Jing RM 178 the 80 g, and the Fujian whites RM 79 for White Peony and RM 199 for Silver Needle, both in 50 g.

Shipping within West Malaysia is free from RM 100 and RM 8 below that, and the online shop takes orders around the clock. The chain's classes and tea-art events happen at Shaw Parade in Kuala Lumpur, not here, so this outlet is for buying rather than learning. For a Petaling Jaya drinker it is the place for Taiwanese high-mountain oolong, a yellow tea from Meng Ding or a Fujian white; for aged pu-erh and dark tea by the cake, the specialist in Kota Damansara is the other address in town.
