Every tea has a number and every 2 oz bag of the same grade has the same price. It is the easiest catalogue in Portland to shop from.
Portal Tea started in 2003 as a cosy tea shop on NW 23rd Avenue called Tea Chai Té, and the company says it was the first to bring bubble tea, and free wifi, to Portland. In 2011 it opened a second shop in Sellwood inside a red 1920 Seattle Pacific Railroad caboose, and at its twentieth anniversary, in 2023, it took the name Portal Tea. It is run by Dominic and Angela Valdes, a husband-and-wife team, and a kombucha spin-off, Happy Mountain, grew out of the same shops.
The NW 23rd shop, at number 734, lists more than a hundred handcrafted varieties, chai blends made from scratch, nitro teas and kombucha, with courtyard seating outside, and it is open every day from 10 in the morning to 9 at night; the caboose at 7983 SE 13th Ave opens from 9 to 8. The teas are numbered and sold in a gift tin, 2 oz, 4 oz, 9 oz and 1 lb, and the 2 oz prices come in flat steps: Northwest Breakfast #1, Assam #5 and Lapsang Souchong #3 at 9 US$; Dragonwell #30, Iron Goddess of Mercy #40 and Sencha Fukamushi #105 at 15,50 US$.
The numbers matter in practice: a regular can reorder #40 without remembering a name, and the flat pricing means the choice between an Assam and a Lapsang is about taste, not money. The company's office is on NE Farragut St and a third shop is in Eugene. Online orders ship free from 40 US$, and in-store pickup is same-day from 10 in the morning to 8 at night, which for a Portland address is faster than any courier.

The one worth the trip
Sencha Fukamushi #105

A deep-steamed Japanese sencha, number 105, is the reason to walk NW 23rd to the end: fukamushi leaf is broken and cloudy on purpose, brews in under a minute, and a shop that sells it in 2 oz for 15,50 US$ is offering the style at half the commitment of a Japanese import.
