McNulty's Tea & Coffee
Tea and coffee merchants on Christopher Street since 1895, still weighing loose leaf out of bins and chests into 4 oz bags.
The bins, chests and scales behind the counter date from the previous century, and the two Taiwanese oolongs at the top of the list are the reason to walk past the coffee.
McNulty's has been selling tea and coffee at 109 Christopher Street, in Greenwich Village, since 1895. The shop itself is the argument: sacks of coffee and chests of tea are stacked in plain view, and the bins, chests and scales used to store and weigh them date back to the previous century, as the house says plainly on its own about page. It is a corner store that sells leaf and bean to take home, not a café that grew a retail shelf.
Loose tea is sold by the 4 oz bag. The house English Breakfast starts at US$ 10, a Bai Mu Dan white peony and a loose pu-erh are US$ 12, and a premium-grade Sencha is US$ 15. At the top, at US$ 27.50 each, sit a matcha and the two Taiwanese oolongs: Tung Ting Extra Fancy Formosa and Oriental Beauty, the white-tip oolong also called Dongfang Meiren. Lavender comes in a 2 oz tin at US$ 13.95.
Beyond the loose leaf there are packaged tea brands, a long list of coffees roasted under the McNulty's name with origins from Africa, Asia and the Americas, and then steeping and brewing gear, mugs and gift sets. The store opens Monday to Saturday from 11:00 to 19:00 and Sunday from 11:00 to 17:00, and online orders ship from the shop, so a tea tried in the Village can be reordered from anywhere in the country.

What to buy here
English Breakfast
McNulty's English Breakfast
from US$ 10 · 4 oz
The house blend under the house name, and the cheapest bag on the list: the simplest way to find out what a counter that has been blending since 1895 calls a breakfast tea.
See our page on this tea →Dong Ding
Tung Ting Extra Fancy Formosa Oolong
from US$ 27.50 · 4 oz
A Taiwanese Dong Ding at the top of the price list, sold in the same 4 oz bag as the breakfast tea — a generous amount of leaf for a rolled oolong.

White Peony: Bai Mu Dan (4 oz bag)
from US$ 12 · 4 oz
The only white on the list and one of the cheaper bags. Bai Mu Dan is picked as bud and leaf rather than bud alone, which is why it costs less than a silver needle.

The one worth the trip
Oriental Beauty (Dongfang Meiren) White Tip Oolong
from US$ 27.50 · 4 oz
Dongfang Meiren is the bug-bitten Taiwanese oolong: leafhoppers feed on the leaf before plucking, and the plant's response to that is what shapes the tea. McNulty's sells it in the same 4 oz bag as everything else, at the top of the price list next to the Tung Ting. Buying both and drinking them side by side is the most interesting thing this shelf allows.
