Brackendale Tea Co
A family-run tea room and shop in Blackwood, in the hills south of Adelaide, with its own blends in eco bags and tins and high tea by reservation.
The sizes are the tell. A four-cup sample before anything else, then a 50 g bag, then the tin: this is a shop built for people who want to taste before they commit.
Brackendale Tea Co started as an online loose-leaf company founded by Kristie Deen, and in early 2019 it changed hands: the current owner, who grew up on a dairy farm in the south-east of South Australia and lived for years in the United Kingdom, bought it on a friend's recommendation and runs it with her husband and their two grown children. The business is in Blackwood, in the Mitcham hills south of the city, at Shop 1/370 Shepherds Hill Road, a tea room and shop under one roof.
The range runs past sixty teas and infusions, most of them small-batch blends under names like Hula Dancing Doll and Czar Nicholas Russian Caravan, with a plainer shelf underneath: an organic English Breakfast, a second-flush Darjeeling, a Keemun, a sencha, an organic Pai Mu Tan and a masala chai. Several have medals from the national Golden Leaf Awards, among them a gold for the Darjeeling in 2022 and one for the Cream Earl Grey pu-erh in 2024. Almost every tea sells in the same seven formats, from a four-cup sample up to a 200 g bag or a 125 g tin.
The tea room is the other half of the business: high teas and private events such as bridal and baby showers, booked by phone on the tea room's own number, with the house teas and home baking. Online orders are packed at the shop and either posted or held for collection, and when the family goes away the site says so, with orders prepared on their return. It is the kind of place where the person serving you also chose the tea.

The one worth the trip
Pai Mu Tan Organic
from A$ 23.80 · 50 g
The organic Pai Mu Tan, the shop's one plain white tea and the only one on this page sold without a 200 g option, because it is the kind of leaf you buy 50 g of at a time. Drink it in the tea room first, then take the tin home: it is a long drive from the city, and this is the tea that justifies it.
