T2 Tea
T2's Adelaide shop on the ground floor of Rundle Place, with the Melbourne tea company's boxed loose leaf and late trading on Friday nights.
Rundle Mall is where Adelaide goes shopping, and this is the one door on it where the thing being sold is a plain oolong in a cardboard cube.
T2 began in 1996 as a single store in Fitzroy, Melbourne, and now sells online and in shops across Australia and abroad. In Adelaide it has four shops, and the city one is Shop G40 on the ground floor of Rundle Place, the shopping centre at 77 Rundle Mall, the pedestrian street at the heart of the retail district. It keeps long shopping hours: from 9 on weekdays, until 9 pm on Fridays and from 11 on Sundays. Online orders can be collected at the counter.
Most of the loose leaf comes in the brand's colourful cardboard cubes, 50 or 100 g of tea sealed in a compostable bag, and many everyday teas also come as 250 g refills or tins. The classics are the reason to come: an English Breakfast and a Japanese Sencha in the 100 g box, a China Jasmine of green tea blended with jasmine, a plain oolong, a Pai Mu Tan white tea in the 50 g cube and the house chai, black tea with a spice blend meant for milk and honey. Around them sit the flavoured blends that make up most of the range.
The shop also sells the company's teaware, designed at its own studio in Melbourne, from the cups and teapots to matcha bowls and whisks, and it is where the gift packs and the seasonal editions turn up first. If you are choosing between the three T2 shops in the suburbs and this one, the city shop wins on hours: it is the one you can reach after work on a Friday, and it opens on Sunday too.

What to buy here
Sencha
Japanese Sencha Loose Leaf Cube
A$ 26 · 100 g
A straight Japanese sencha in the 100 g box, light and grassy with sweet notes; the shop's own advice is one to three minutes at 80 °C, which is short enough to get it right the first time.
See our page on this tea →Jasmine
China Jasmine Loose Leaf Cube
A$ 22 · 100 g
Green tea blended with jasmine for a light-yellow cup with a delicate floral scent, in the 100 g cube; it is the one to hand to somebody who says they do not like green tea, and it goes with a meal.
See our page on this tea →Pai Mu Tan
Pai Mu Tan Loose Leaf Cube
A$ 22 · 50 g
The white tea of the range, small buds and leaves plucked in early spring, in the smaller 50 g cube: pale, floral and smooth with a melon note, brewed four to six minutes at 80 °C.

The one worth the trip
Oolong Loose Leaf Cube
A$ 18 · 100 g
The plain oolong, 100 g of unflavoured, semi-oxidised leaf in a cardboard cube on a street otherwise given over to fashion and phones. Light and nutty with a fruity aroma, brewed three to six minutes at 90 °C, it is the tea that tells you a chain shop still keeps a real classics shelf behind the gift boxes.
