Snowy Owl Arts + Tea House

An artist's tea blender and studio inside Buffalo's old food terminal, open on Saturdays, where every blend costs the same by the ounce.

One price for the whole wall — $11.99 the ounce — turns the shelf into a question of taste alone, which is rarer in a tea shop than it sounds.

Snowy Owl Arts + Tea House sits at 1500 Clinton Street, Unit 156, inside the Niagara Frontier Food Terminal, the historic wholesale market on Buffalo's east side, with free off-street parking. It is the production hub of Snowy Owl Tea and the studio of its owner, Tara Bystran-Pruski, a painter with an M.F.A. from the Vermont College of Fine Arts who teaches painting and drawing at Daemen College, co-founded Emerging Leaders in the Arts Buffalo and has run ArtLab, a free community arts group, for more than ten years. The room mixes vintage furniture and natural details with what the shop calls a Parisian-bohemian streak.

Every tea is blended in-house from whole-leaf tea, fruit, flowers, herbs and freshly ground spices, organic when possible, and the shop says it never repackages someone else's blend. The catalogue runs in three tiers: year-round Flagship teas, Seasonal blends that stay for three to six months, and Smol Batch releases, monthly experiments capped at 50 units each. Everything is priced alike, $11.99 for 1 oz or $19.99 for 2 oz: a lavender-vanilla Earl Grey, a cardamom-vanilla black, sencha with roasted black rice, a violet-lemongrass green over gunpowder, a fig-rose oolong, and rooibos and hibiscus blends on the herbal side.

Shop hours are Saturdays only, 12:00 to 17:00, when the Tea + Craft Circle takes over the tables: free, no registration, bring knitting or a sketchbook and order a cup. The rest of the calendar is events, from ArtLab's monthly open critique to workshops, tea tastings, tarot readings and the Portal art crawl through the terminal's studios, and the space can be booked privately. Online orders ship free within the US over $100, and the address, phone and a contact form are on the site for anyone who wants to plan a weekday visit.

What to buy here

  • Genmaicha

Witching Hour: Sencha Roasted Rice Tea

    from US$ 11.99 · 1 oz

A genmaicha built on sencha and roasted black rice instead of the usual brown: toastier, darker in the cup, and the most tea-like thing on a shelf that leans toward blends.

  • Earl Grey

Midnight Moon: Lavender Vanilla Earl Grey

    from US$ 11.99 · 1 oz

Earl Grey with organic lavender and vanilla on top of the bergamot, made for the tea-latte crowd but still a proper black tea underneath.

  • Oolong tea

    Fig Rose Oolong

    US$ 19.99 · 2 oz

The only oolong in the house, dressed with rosehips, rose petals and fig; the 1 oz size was sold out when we checked, so it is a 2 oz commitment.

The one worth the trip

Ginger Peach Smol-Batch Black Tea

from US$ 11.99 · 1 oz

A Smol Batch: organic English Breakfast with ginger root and peach, made in a monthly run of at most 50 units and gone when it is gone. That limit is the reason to drive to the terminal on a Saturday rather than order from the couch — the batch on the shelf that afternoon is the batch, and the person who blended it is pouring it at the craft table.
