A high-street tea house with a Victorian name and a shelf that still reads like a tea list: breakfast, Earl Grey, Assam, Darjeeling, jasmine, sencha, oolong, white.

Whittard of Chelsea's Leeds store is at 38 Lands Lane, in the pedestrian streets of the city centre. The chain's own page describes it as a space filled with teas, coffees and hot chocolates, open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 18:00 and Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00. The same page is frank about access: the entrance is a single step through a doorway 81 cm wide, a portable ramp is available on request and there is a doorbell for assistance. Online orders can be collected in store, and the Taste Promise lets you return a tea you do not like for a refund or exchange.

The company tells its own history on its site: Walter Whittard left the family leather business at seventeen for a tea trader in the City of London and, at twenty-five, in 1886, opened his own shop on Fleet Street with the philosophy of buying the best. After the warehouse burned in the Blitz his sons moved the business to Fulham Road in Chelsea, and the firm later took the name Whittard of Chelsea. In 2026 the company marks 140 years. It sells tea, coffee and hot chocolate under one roof, and the Leeds shelf gives tea about a third of the room.

The loose leaf comes in 100 g pouches, with a caddy a few pounds more. English Breakfast, which the company sources from West Java rather than the usual Assam and Ceylon, Earl Grey, Tippy Assam, Darjeeling and Jasmine are £10.95; Sencha Asagiri from Kirishima is £15.95; a Taiwanese Milk Oolong is £19.95; Silver Needle is £19.95 for 50 g. The shelf also holds Dragon Well, Gyokuro, a Jade Oolong and a dated Margaret's Hope first-flush Darjeeling, next to the chain's flavoured blends, teabags, instant teas and matcha. For a first visit, the breakfast and the sencha show the two ends of the range.

What to buy here

  • English Breakfast

    English Breakfast Loose Leaf Tea

    from £ 10.95 · 100 g pouch

The house breakfast blend in a 100 g pouch or a 140 g caddy, sourced, the company says, entirely from West Java, which makes it closer to a single-origin tea than most breakfast blends. The right first pouch from this shelf, and the one to compare with the market across town.

  • Sencha

    Sencha Asagiri Loose Leaf Tea

    from £ 15.95 · 100 g pouch

A Japanese sencha from the fog-covered gardens of Kirishima, in a 100 g pouch or caddy. It is the most serious green on the shelf and the one that shows what the chain can do when it leaves the blends alone.

  • Milk Oolong

    Milk Oolong Loose Leaf Tea

    £ 19.95 · 100 g pouch

A lightly oxidised Taiwanese Jin Xuan oolong in a 100 g pouch, naturally creamy without flavouring. It is the oolong to buy here instead of the chain's peach and garden-party versions, and a bigger bag than most shops sell this tea in.

The one worth the trip

Silver Needle Loose Leaf Tea

from £ 19.95 · 50 g pouch

Silver Needle, Baihao Yinzhen, made from tea buds alone, in a 50 g pouch or caddy. It is the quietest tea in a shop built on flavour, and the one that rewards a visit rather than a click: smell the open caddy before you decide. Brew it below the boil, around 75 °C, for three to four minutes, and never with milk.
