Birdhouse blends its own tea on Sidney Street and sells it across a counter that doubles as a tea bar and kitchen. The house conceit is local: a Sheffield collection with blends named Kelham Island, Peace Gardens and Full Monty, and a Peak District collection next to it with Blue John and Duchess Georgiana. The names are not decoration — they are how the range is organised, and they tell you immediately that this is a blender with a place rather than an importer with a catalogue.
The pricing is unusually flat and unusually easy to plan around. A mini bag is 2,95 £, the regular bag is 5,00 £ and the large is 9,00 £ across almost the entire range; what changes is the weight behind the label, because a light herbal fills more volume per gram than a dense black leaf. So the regular bag is 75 g for English Breakfast, Earl Grey, Lapsang Souchong, sencha and rooibos, 60 g for most of the Sheffield blends, and 50 g for the pure chamomile and peppermint.
Behind the named blends there is a straight classics shelf, which is what makes the shop usable rather than just charming: English Breakfast, Earl Grey and a decaf version of the first, Lapsang Souchong, a Japanese sencha, pure rooibos and a house chai, all at the same 5,00 £. The tea bar pours the same range by the cup from nine in the morning, seven days a week, and the kitchen closes an hour before the room does.

The one worth the trip
Full Monty

The blend that carries the city's most exported phrase, and the only one on the list we would send somebody across Sheffield for. It is a strong black blend in the Yorkshire idiom, sold in a 75 g regular bag and in a 300 g bulk bag that works out cheaper per gram than almost anything else the shop sells. Drink it the local way — hard water, short steep, a splash of milk — and buy the big bag if it lands.
