Čaj Chai Teahouse

A Gothic Quarter teahouse open since 2004 that numbers every lot it imports and sells them in portions starting at six grams.

In storeShips onlineOpen since 2004
Every tea carries a number, a harvest and a portion size, and the smallest portion in the house is six grams of Wuyi rock tea.

Čaj Chai opened in 2004 at Carrer de Salomó ben Adret 12, in El Call, the medieval Jewish quarter inside the Barri Gòtic, and calls itself Barcelona's first specialty teahouse. It is run by a Czech importer who buys directly from producers and gives every lot a number. The name pairs čaj, the Czech word, with its international echo; the model is the Central European čajovna, a room built around the ritual of tea rather than a café with tea on the menu.

The house lists over 140 teas and sizes each portion to what the tea is. Six grams buys Wuyi Ban Tian Yao; ten grams, a Baozhong aged since the nineties; fifteen, Enshi Yu Lu; twenty, Duyun Mao Jian; twenty-five, GABA Ruby Red Oolong, a 2016 charcoal-roasted Dong Ding, a 2021 sheng or a 2002 Liu Bao. Fifty grams is the Japanese and Korean size, for Ureshino tamaryokucha, Gyokuro Jade Dew, Saemidori sencha and Korean sejak. The everyday teas, organic Assam, bancha and lapsang, come in 100 g.

There is a counter for gong fu cha, the high-leaf, short-infusion method the house has practised for two decades, plus guided ceremonies, seasonal tastings and workshops on brewing, tea history, sensory evaluation, pu-erh and Japanese greens. A quarterly Tea Club ships in January, April, July and October in two tiers, with live virtual tastings, and reaches the rest of Europe. Opening hours are not posted on the website, which points visitors to its Google profile, so check before walking over.

What to buy here

  • Wuyi Oolong

    #325 Wuyi Ban Tian Yao

    € 5.50 · 6 g

The smallest portion in the house: six grams of Wuyi rock oolong, sized for a gong fu session rather than for a tin on your shelf.

  • Baozhong

    #308 90s Aged Baozhong

    € 8 · 10 g

A Taiwanese Baozhong aged since the nineties, offered in ten grams. Dated aged oolong in a portion that small is the whole argument for a shop that numbers its lots.

  • Enshi Yulu

#274 Enshi Yu Lu Ming Qian — Jade Dew

    € 12 · 15 g

Enshi Yu Lu is one of the few steamed Chinese greens, picked before Qingming, and the house sells it in fifteen grams.

The one worth the trip

#705 2002 Aged Liu Bao

€ 15 · 25 g

Liu Bao is hei cha, the sixth tea family, and this lot is dated 2002 and sold in twenty-five grams. The house files its dark teas by year — a 2021 sheng, a 2015 Lincang shou tuo, this 2002 Liu Bao — so you can line up two decades of ageing on one table without buying a whole cake. It is the clearest thing this teahouse does that a supermarket shelf cannot.
