A one-shop Assam tea depot on Prenderghast Road in Secunderabad, founded in 1975 and run by the Lakhi family for three generations.
Fifty years at one address is the whole pitch: the shop never opened a second branch, it opened a website, and the prices are the neighbourhood's, not a boutique's.
Lucky Tea Depot began in 1975, when Manoharlal K Lakhi opened a small tea shop on Prenderghast Road in Secunderabad; by the shop's own account it has traded from the present address, 1-8-144/2, since 1980. What started as a neighbourhood supplier grew into a branded range without ever leaving the street. Ravi M Lakhi joined in 2006 and took the Lakhi's packets to homes across India through the online shop, with one rule the house repeats on every page: natural ingredients or natural flavours only, no artificial flavours, colours or essence.
The list is Assam first and everything else after. The black teas are chai patti sold in 250 g pouches with 200 g gift tins and 500 g refills: Ruhani Chai, a high-grown Assam, a Broken Leaf, and the spiced ones, Masala with ginger, cardamom and cinnamon, Kesar Elaichi with saffron, Ginger, Vanilla Elaichi. The green teas are a super fine grade from Assam in 100 g pouches, plain or with tulsi, lemon, cinnamon or a nine-spice kahwa. The infusions come in 50 g jars: chamomile flowers, butterfly pea flowers, rose petals with green tea.
The shop opens Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 20:30 and closes on Sunday, at the Arya Vysya Abhyudaya Sangam Kalyana Mandapam building on Prenderghast Road, postcode 500003. Online orders ship pan-India from Hyderabad with free delivery. The site's brewing notes are short and practical, a rolling boil for the black teas and 80 °C for the green, two to three minutes for black and five to seven for the herbal jars, which is as much ceremony as a chai depot needs.
