Our favorite tea shops in Hyderabad

Hyderabad is a chai city before it is a tea city: the cup of the day is Irani chai poured in Old City cafés, and the shops that sell leaf to take home are blenders of strong Assam for the milk pot rather than boutiques. Three of them have their own doors and their own prices online: a 1964 blender from the Old City with a retail store on Mir Alam Mandi Road, a 1975 depot on Prenderghast Road in Secunderabad, and a 1976 wholesaler in Kachiguda with a retail counter. Between them you get everyday Assam at 80 ₹ the 100 g, a masala chai at 240 ₹ the 250 g and, on the loose-leaf side, a Darjeeling black tea at 242 ₹ the 25 g. Prices are in rupees; the city's one specialty tea lounge is listed further down without prices, because everything on its site is marked down today.

    The Old City's house blender since 1964, started by a pharmacist, with its own wholesale-and-retail store on Mir Alam Mandi Road opposite Darum Shifa Stadium (opened in 2022), a counter at Shabbir Medical Hall in Afzal Gunj, and BHAI ki CHAI cafés on Road No. 7 and Road No. 3 in Banjara Hills where the same packets are sold. The everyday blends are the cheapest leaf on this page, an Assam black at 80 ₹ and a green at 70 ₹ the 100 g; the specialty side comes from the group's Finjaan lounge in 25 g packs: Wonder of Darjeeling at 242 ₹, a Kashmiri kahwa at 220 ₹, butterfly pea Blue Tea at 290 ₹ and Bulgarian rose buds at 327 ₹.     A one-shop tea depot on Prenderghast Road in Secunderabad, founded by Manoharlal K Lakhi in 1975 and run by the family for three generations; the store has traded from this address since 1980 and opens Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 20:30. The Lakhi's range is Assam through and through: a plain green tea at 120 ₹ the 100 g, Ruhani Chai high-grown Assam at 180 ₹ the 250 g, a masala chai with ginger, cardamom and cinnamon at 240 ₹ the 250 g and a nine-spice kahwa at 210 ₹ the 100 g, plus chamomile and butterfly pea flowers at 330 ₹ the 50 g jar.     Modi Tea's retail counter in Kachiguda, at flat G3 of Yashoda Nandanam Apartments, open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 20:00 and run by a company that began as a wholesale tea trader in Hyderabad in 1976 and now packs its own Assam blends and distributes Girnar. The house CTC is the bargain of the page, Royale at 110 ₹ the 250 g plain or as a masala blend; the tea-bag side is Girnar, a 25-bag green at 130 ₹ and 10-bag jasmine, Moroccan mint and camomile-honey boxes at 80 ₹ each.
