Teapot - Tea or Coffee

Teapot - Tea or Coffee opened as a small stall in Leeds Kirkgate Market in 2014, selling loose leaf tea and coffee beans the owners roast themselves. The company's own account is that the stall won public votes for its Christmas display and that in 2016 it moved into the market's new Food Hall, where it opened its first café, Cafe C. That is the address today: Cafe C, Food Hall, Leeds Kirkgate Market, 34 George Street. The café pours teas, coffee and Belgian hot chocolate, and behind it the shop sells tea by the kilo, honey from the owners' own hives, herbs and brewing kit.

Every tea carries a number, and the list runs to more than a hundred: some thirty-six blacks, from a Ceylon Highlands OP1 and a Rwandan Rukeri to Lapsang Souchong and a Turkish big-leaf tea; some thirty greens, among them a China sencha, Gunpowder Temple of Heaven, a Japanese-style genmaicha, an organic bancha and a Jeju Sejak from South Korea; three oolongs, six whites, four pu-erhs, one yellow tea, rooibos, fruit teas, yerba mate and flowering teas. The site says the shop is the only one in the UK selling aromatic tea bouquets, and that the staff will compose a blend to your taste.

The pricing is the market's. Each tea comes in a 20 g sampler, in 50 g, 125 g and 250 g bags and, for most, a kilo, with the bigger bags discounted. English Breakfast, Earl Grey Original and Sencha China are £3.95 for 50 g, the house Yorkshire Blend (Kirkgate Tea) is £2.95, Ceylon Highlands OP1 £4.25, the organic Tie Guan Yin £5.50, organic Pai Mu Tan £6.00 and the organic matcha £5.00 for 50 g. Online orders can be collected at the café by arrangement; delivery inside Leeds is free on Mondays and Thursdays, and second-class UK postage is free too.
