Veda House is at ul. Gladstone 2, by the corner with Hristo Botev Boulevard, and it is open every day of the week from half past ten in the morning to half past ten at night; tables can be booked by phone. It calls itself a tea house that is also a restaurant with a large vegetarian menu. Inside there are piles of soft cushions, and the house suggests leaving your shoes and staying a while.
The food is vegetarian, cooked to the house's own recipes along the lines of Ayurvedic cooking, with traditional Indian sweets alongside. The ice cream is made on the spot from real cream, tea, spices, fruit and nuts, so tea turns up in the dessert as well as the cup. The house sends a newsletter with the week's lunch dishes, events and new teas and ice creams for anyone who wants to be the first to try them.
The tea shop, Veda Tea, sells for home what the house serves: white, green, yellow, oolong, black and pu-erh, plus mate, rooibos and herbal blends, with teapots and everything needed to brew and serve. Most teas come in 50, 100, 200 and 500 g. The classics are cheap to start with, such as a Chinese sencha, Assam, English Breakfast and Gunpowder, and the list climbs to Lung Ching, Pai Mu Tan and a milky oolong.
