Müürivahe Kohvi ja Teepood

The Old Town coffee-and-tea shop by the city wall that has weighed loose leaf since the early 1990s: 150-plus teas and coffees, any of them in a 50 g packet.

Nothing here costs more than a few euros to try, and the shop's whole method is built around that: weigh it, take 50 g, come back for the ones you liked.

Müürivahe Kohvi ja Teepood is at Müürivahe 22, the street that runs along the inside of the Old Town wall between the Viru gate and the Karja gate. The company behind it, Tasav OÜ, runs the web shop teebutiik.ee, and its site says the shop has traded coffee and tea here since the early 1990s, in the same corner for more than thirty years. The pitch is simple: more than 150 teas and coffees, every order weighed on the spot, and any tea available in a 50 g packet so that trying one is cheap.

The tea wall runs from Chinese and Japanese classics to a very long list of flavoured greens, blacks and fruit blends, and the prices are among the lowest in Tallinn: an Assam Satrupa TGFOP1 at 3,90 €, a Darjeeling Gielle first flush at 3,80 € and a Japan Sencha at 3,50 € per 50 g, a Tie Kuan Yin oolong at 6,00 € and a Pai Mu Tan Silvery Needle white at 7,90 €. Sizes go up through 100, 200 and 500 g to a kilo, with the price scaling in a straight line. Ceremonial matcha from Japan comes in a 100 g pack.

The shop is also Tallinn's yerba mate counter: a dozen Argentine, Paraguayan and Brazilian brands in 500 g and 1 kg bags, gourds, bombillas and green mate by the 50 g. Coffee is roasted in Estonia and ground to your machine, and there are Andalusian olive oils on the same shelves. Hours are Monday to Friday 10:00 to 18:00 and Saturday 11:00 to 16:00, closed on Sunday; web orders go to parcel lockers across Estonia free from 39 €, and to Finland, Latvia and Lithuania from 99 €.
