A 50 g packet is the unit of this shop, and that is what makes four hundred teas approachable rather than intimidating.
House of Tea & Coffee sits at Kiebachgasse 2, in the Altstadt near the Ottoburg. It opened in 1999 as a branch of Plangger Delikatessen, founded by Hans Friembichler and Rudolf Plangger, and in 2018 Johann Friembichler junior took the business over and enlarged the old-town shop. The shelves now hold more than 400 teas and some twenty coffees, and the shop describes itself as a specialist retailer first: the counter is for buying leaf, and the garden behind it is where tea, coffee, matcha latte and chai latte are served to drink in.
Almost everything is sold in 50, 100, 250 and 500 g packets, and the smallest size is the one to start with. On this list a Darjeeling Royal Garden FTGFOP1 first flush is the least expensive way in, at 7,30 € the 50 g, and the estate Assam from Halmari, sold in the same 50 g, is the dearest. Between them sit a China Sencha Bio, a Japanese Genmaicha, a Tie Kuan Yin, a Formosa Tung Ting jade oolong and a Pai Mu Tan Superior, all by the 100 g. The rarities section lists a 2025 flight tea, shincha, tea bricks and pu-erh.
The shop is open six days a week, with a midday break from Monday to Thursday, and the company's registered office is in Absam, a few kilometres east; nothing on its site suggests a second shop there. Online orders ship within 24 hours to Austria and Germany, free of charge from 39 €, which is roughly four 50 g packets, so the natural rhythm is to taste in the garden, buy a few small packets, and reorder the ones that stuck.
