Tea Market & Gift Bar
A Brookside tea shop and gift bar, open since 2002, that sells organic loose teas and house blends by the ounce, from a 1 oz bag up to 4 oz.
The ounce is the unit here, and that changes how you shop: five dollars is enough to take home a Darjeeling, a jade oolong and a sencha side by side and decide at home which one earns the bigger bag.
Tea Market & Gift Bar sits at 329 E 55th St in Brookside and has been selling tea there since 2002. It opens Monday to Thursday from 10am to 5pm, Friday until 6pm and Saturday until 5pm, and closes on Sunday. The loose teas are sold by the ounce in bags of 1, 2, 3 and 4 oz across white, green, matcha, oolong, black, chai and herbal shelves, next to samplers, bagged teas and sachets, teaware and a gift bar with gifts and snacks.
The organic basics are priced to be tried: English Breakfast at US$ 4.45 the ounce, rooibos at US$ 4.50, Darjeeling at US$ 5.20 and Earl Grey at US$ 5.50, with a high-grade organic sencha at US$ 6, Yin Hao jasmine at US$ 5.90 and a jade oolong at US$ 8.40. Masala chai and an aged pu-erh from the Jing Mai mountains sit in the same range, and the ceremonial matcha starts at the 30 g tin. House blends carry local names, among them KC Dynasty and KC Summer, and the Moroccan Mint is an exclusive house blend.
The shop calls itself a tea shop with the heart of a teacher, and the services follow from that. Staff offer a free 15-minute consultation on weekdays, and a private one with Stacie costs US$ 15. Groups of five to twenty can book a tea experience with three curated tastings and a tea talk for US$ 200 per group. Web orders ship free within the United States over US$ 75, or can be collected at the shop at no charge.
