Simon Lévelt Utrecht
The Utrecht shop of the Dutch coffee and tea house founded in 1826, on the Vismarkt by the Oudegracht, with organic loose teas sold mostly from 100 g.
A coffee-and-tea shop a stone's throw from the Domtoren where the tea wall runs from Engelse Melange at €5.95 to Da Hong Pao, and the everyday teas come by the kilo.
Simon Lévelt tells its own history on its site: what began in 1826 as a small shop in Amsterdam's harbour grew, over six generations, into a Dutch house of coffee and tea. All of its coffee and tea is certified organic, the coffee is roasted and the tea blended at its own facility in Haarlem, and the range counts more than 150 teas and 25 coffees. The Utrecht shop is at Vismarkt 21A, on the Oudegracht a stone's throw from the Domtoren, and the chain describes it as a premium coffee and tea specialist with 30 coffees and 150 teas, coffee machines, gifts and tableware. It opens Monday 12:00–18:00, Tuesday to Friday 9:30–18:00, Saturday 9:30–17:30 and Sunday 12:00–17:00.
Loose teas are mostly sold from 100 g, with 1 kg packs for the ones people drink every day. The black side of the list is where the prices are gentlest: Earl Grey at €5.80, Engelse Melange at €5.95, Keemun Congou at €6.95 and Darjeeling Zomerpluk, the summer flush, at €8.95, all for 100 g. The greens follow the same pattern, Sencha at €5.60 and Jasmine Chung Hao at €8.60 for 100 g, with Dragonwell at €7.95 for 75 g; the herbal shelf has Kamille at €4.95 for 50 g and Rooibos at €5.40 for 100 g.
The quieter corners are the oolongs and the white tea. Ti Kuan Yin is €10.40 for 100 g and Da Hong Pao, the Wuyi rock oolong, €8.95 for 50 g; Pai Mu Tan, the white peony, starts at €4.60 for a 30 g pack. Coffee shares the counter, ground fresh for each customer, which is why most people in the queue are holding a bag of beans; the tea wall is the reason to stay a few minutes longer.
