Warm Barley Tea with Toasted Rice and Ginger

A soothing, caffeine-free wellness cup blending roasted barley with toasted rice and a slice of ginger—comforting on the stomach and warming on a cool evening.

Barley tea is one of the most soothing caffeine-free drinks you can make, and this version turns it into a gentle wellness ritual. Roasted barley already tastes warm and nutty; adding a little toasted rice deepens that toasty grain character, while a slice of fresh ginger brings a comforting warmth.

Because barley tea is naturally caffeine-free, it is a perfect after-dinner or bedtime drink. Traditionally sipped warm to settle the stomach after a meal, it feels nourishing without being heavy and won't interfere with sleep.

Keep the brew gentle—steep, don't over-boil. A long, rolling boil can make the grain notes harsh; a 5-minute steep in just-boiled water gives a smooth, mellow, lightly sweet cup. A touch of honey rounds it out if you like.

A quick safety note: barley is a gluten-containing grain, so this drink is not suitable for anyone with celiac disease or gluten intolerance. For everyone else, it is one of the kindest, most calming everyday cups around.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp roasted barley kernels (or 1 brewing bag)
  • 1 tbsp toasted brown or white rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 thin slices fresh ginger
  • 1 tsp honey (optional)

How to make it

  1. 1Bring the water to a boil, then remove from the heat.
  2. 2Add the roasted barley, toasted rice, and ginger slices to the hot water.
  3. 3Cover and steep for 5 minutes (do not keep boiling).
  4. 4Strain into a mug, stir in honey if desired, and sip warm.
