Malawi Black Tea Rum Punch

A bold rum punch built on strong Malawian Black tea, lime, and spiced syrup — malty, tropical, and easily made into a non-alcoholic version for the same depth without the rum.

Strong black tea has long been a backbone of classic rum punches, and Malawian Black's exceptional malt and body make it one of the better choices for the job — it holds its own against rum, citrus, and spice rather than disappearing into the mix.

Brewing the tea extra strong and cooling it fully before mixing is essential; a weak or warm tea base will water down the punch and melt the ice too quickly. Make the tea well ahead and chill it properly.

A spiced syrup made with brown sugar, cinnamon, and a few cloves echoes the tea's own malty warmth, while fresh lime juice keeps the whole punch from tipping into heaviness. Dark or spiced rum is the natural match here, mirroring the tea's depth.

For a non-alcoholic mocktail version, simply omit the rum and add a splash of ginger beer in its place — the ginger beer's spice and fizz fill the gap nicely, giving you the same malty, citrusy, lightly spiced punch without the alcohol.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup strong-brewed Malawian Black tea, cooled
  • 120 ml dark or spiced rum (omit for mocktail; add 120 ml ginger beer instead)
  • 60 ml fresh lime juice
  • 60 ml spiced brown sugar syrup (brown sugar, water, cinnamon, 2 cloves, simmered and cooled)
  • Orange slices, for garnish
  • Ice cubes
  • Fresh mint sprigs, for garnish

How to make it

  1. 1Brew the tea extra strong, then cool it completely in the refrigerator.
  2. 2Make the spiced syrup by simmering equal parts brown sugar and water with a cinnamon stick and 2 cloves for 5 minutes; strain and cool.
  3. 3In a pitcher, combine the cooled tea, rum (or ginger beer for the mocktail), lime juice, and spiced syrup. Stir well.
  4. 4Fill glasses with ice, pour the punch over, and garnish with orange slices and fresh mint.
