Smoked Russian Caravan Lemonade
Cold-brewed Russian Caravan poured over fresh lemonade with a sprig of rosemary—an iced tea that tastes like a backyard barbecue at dusk.
The flavor profile of Russian Caravan—malty Keemun, mellow Oolong, hints of pine smoke—is a natural fit for lemonade. The smoke gives the drink an unexpected savory edge, like grilled lemons at a summer cookout, while the tea's malt rounds out the sharpness of the citrus.
Cold-brewing the tea is essential. Hot brews chilled with ice turn the gentle smoke into something acrid; an overnight cold brew keeps the campfire whisper rounded and pleasant, with all the malt intact.
Make the lemonade fresh—bottled stuff has too much sugar and not enough citrus. Three fat lemons, two tablespoons of honey, and three cups of cold water is the right ratio. The honey nods to the tea and stays softer on the palate than refined sugar.
Rosemary is the finishing move. A sprig slapped between the palms and dropped in releases its piney oils, which dance with the tea's smoke and make the glass smell like a holiday meal. Serve in tall glasses with thick lemon wheels.
Ingredients
- 3 Russian Caravan tea bags
- 2 cups cold water (for tea)
- 3 large lemons, juiced
- 3 cups cold water (for lemonade)
- 2 tbsp honey
- Fresh rosemary sprigs
- Lemon wheels for garnish
- Ice cubes
How to make it
- 1Cold-brew: place tea bags in 2 cups cold water and refrigerate 8–12 hours. Remove tea bags.
- 2Make lemonade: in a pitcher, whisk lemon juice, honey, and 3 cups cold water until honey dissolves.
- 3Fill two tall glasses with ice. Pour lemonade halfway up.
- 4Top with the cold-brewed tea, pouring slowly so the layers stay visible at first.
- 5Slap a rosemary sprig between your palms to release its oils and drop into each glass. Garnish with lemon wheels. Stir gently before drinking.
