Enshi Yulu Focus Tonic with Lemon and Honey
A clean, low-fuss tonic that keeps Enshi Yulu's umami sweetness front and center — built for a calm, focused stretch of work.
Enshi Yulu's steamed character gives it a naturally smooth, low-bitterness profile that doesn't need much dressing up. This tonic keeps the additions minimal so the tea's signature jade color and umami sweetness stay the star of the cup, rather than getting buried under strong flavors.
A small amount of honey rounds out the tea's vegetal sweetness without overpowering it, while a few drops of lemon brighten the cup and balance the umami depth. The goal is a tonic you could sip slowly through a focused work session — refreshing, not heavy.
Brewing temperature matters more here than with most teas. Because steaming preserves delicate compounds that pan-firing would otherwise toughen up, Enshi Yulu is sensitive to over-hot water, which can quickly turn the umami sweetness bitter and grassy in an unpleasant way.
Sip this slowly over 20–30 minutes rather than drinking it all at once — the moderate caffeine and high L-theanine content are traditionally associated with the kind of steady, calm alertness that suits deep work or studying, without the sharp peak and crash of coffee.
Ingredients
- 2g (about 1 tsp) Enshi Yulu leaves
- 200ml water, cooled to 75–80°C
- 1 tsp honey
- 2–3 drops fresh lemon juice
- 1 thin lemon slice for garnish
How to make it
- 1Warm a glass or ceramic cup with a splash of hot water, then discard the water.
- 2Add the Enshi Yulu leaves and pour the 75–80°C water over them.
- 3Steep for 90 seconds to 2 minutes — taste and stop steeping once the umami sweetness comes through clearly.
- 4Stir in honey until dissolved, then add a few drops of lemon juice. Garnish with a thin lemon slice and sip slowly.
